The Blum Family

The following post is from Peter Hernandez, an Aultium Representative.

The holiday season is upon us, and it seems like only yesterday I was taking down the decorations. The wonderful aroma of the Thanksgiving turkey fills the air. Pies cooling on the window sill, sending off their sweet  fragrance. Family and friends arriving at the door, greeting each other with open arms. These are all the signs we look forward to when the holidays arrive. Although we must enjoy the wonderful things of our present, we must also take time to reflect on the past.

I have been in the financial services industry since 2007. Since that time I have been able to meet many people. Some experiences bad, but mostly great! Throughout the year I think of my clients, but during the holiday season I have one particular family that comes to mind, The Blums. The Blums were a young couple from Portland, OR. , and were one of the youngest couples I ever had the pleasure of earning business from. They had just purchased their first home in 2008 and had two young children. Needless to say, they had a lot to be thankful for, but both were full of stress. The burden of a new home and a young family fell on both of their shoulders.

One day The Blums mustered enough courage to contact me and set up some time to do a financial review. In our review we were able to assess their current financial standing and determine the amount of mortgage protection and life insurance that was needed to protect their family in the event of a premature death. We were also able to configure a plan that would return all of their premiums once they no longer needed the policy.  Needless to say, when I left their home I was feeling very accomplished.

I was still very young in my profession but I had accomplished what I set out to do, protect their family’s financial security. I was grateful for the knowledge I had gained up to that point because no one was going to be able to prepare us for what was going to come in the next couple of months. Mr. Blum had gotten sick and was in and out of the hospital for a couple of months.

The doctor’s bills were beginning to accrue and the Blums had no idea of what they were dealing with. We were even beginning to talk about cancelling their policy because it was no longer a priority thinking of their financial well- being. Luckily before the Blums cancelled their policy they spoke to me first and I was able to advise them on a better course of action. Very shortly after, Mr. Blum went to sleep and never woke up. At the age of 25 he caught a mysterious illness and passed away.

Now, I don’t share this story to frighten anyone, I share this story because it reminds me of how precious life really is. Over the years I have been very fortunate to consult many people on their financial well-being and have only had to share in a client’s passing a handful of times. In those small amount of instances I have seen the power of life insurance at work. I have seen families save their homes and continue to have a roof over their heads. I have even been able to witness how not having to stress about finances allowed a family the time to grieve for their loved one.

Every single one of my clients would have given anything for one more day with their loved ones, but the final act of care, via a life insurance death benefit, was the ultimate sign of love. Not because they were receiving money, but because their Father, Mother, Brother, or Sister loved them enough to take the time and get a life insurance policy. As I reflect on my past, I am grateful for the experience that I have acquired over the years. Every person or family that I consult provides me with a new experience that helps me be better equipped to help you prepare for your financial security and your family’s financial well-being.
